Crabb Named Eskenazi Health Chief Medical Officer

David Crabb, M.D., will report directly to Eskenazi Health CEO Lisa Harris, M.D.

Indianapolis, April 4, 2017 – Eskenazi Health announces that David Crabb, M.D., has been named chief medical officer. Dr. Crabb will provide medical staff leadership and have senior administrative responsibility for quality and safety, clinical oversight, clinical informatics, physician engagement, graduate medical education and health care system management. 
 
Dr. Crabb has been associated with Eskenazi Health continuously since the late 1970s, first as a medical student, then as a resident, fellow, director of the gastrointestinal outpatient clinic, and as an attending physician for gastroenterology and general medicine. Dr. Crabb started his new duties Friday, March 17.

“Highly respected for his enormous contributions to the teaching, research and clinical missions of the IU School of Medicine, Dr. Crabb has also demonstrated his commitment through his steady presence at Eskenazi Health, including the introduction of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) into residency training and our primary care sites,” said Dr. Lisa Harris, chief executive officer at Eskenazi Health.

Dr. Crabb served as vice chair for research in the IU School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine from 1993 to 2000, then as chair from 2000 to 2015. He was appointed to serve on the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County’s Board of Trustees from 2008 to 2013 and assumed the role of chief of medicine for Eskenazi Health in 2014, a position he will maintain until a replacement is appointed. Dr. Crabb has also served as chairman of the board for Eskenazi Medical Group since 2016.

“Working with the Eskenazi Health staff in the outpatient and hospital settings, and collaborating with Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services and the Marion County Public Health Department is just about the best job I can think of having,” Dr. Crabb said.  “I am excited for this opportunity and very grateful for the outstanding job Dr. Chris Weaver did in this role. We owe him a great thank you.”

Dr. Crabb is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and he has been elected a master of the American College of Physicians. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the IU School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine in 2016. His extensive experience in leadership also includes service on the boards of directors for numerous organizations, including the American Heart Association – Indianapolis Chapter, Fairbanks Hospital, the Regenstrief Institute, and the Indiana Institute for Global Health. He has also served on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for the National Institutes of Health.
