The Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department also features the 16-bed Eskenazi Health Clinical Decision Unit, an area for patients who may need additional monitoring before being admitted to the hospital or discharged to return home. The unit was created for “observation status patients” who need less than 24 hours of care in order to return home. Evidence-based practice indicates that 80 percent or greater of these patients should be able to return home without an inpatient stay.
