Why the Emergency Department?
Why is the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department at Eskenazi Health offering HIV screening to all patients? In September 2006, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended that all health care providers (including emergency departments) screen all patients ages 13 to 64, even if they are not thought to be at risk. These recommendations were made because people with HIV infection often visit health care settings years before receiving a diagnosis since they are never tested for HIV. Early diagnosis is important. There are excellent treatment options available that, when started early, allow a person with HIV to have a higher quality of life.
