About the HIV Program

Eskenazi Health created the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department HIV program in response to the Centers for Disease Control’s recommendations to provide universal HIV screening in all health care settings. State-certified HIV counselors offer a rapid HIV test to all eligible patients in the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department who are 13 - 64 years of age and have not been tested for HIV at Eskenazi Health in the past calendar year. This test is an oral swab and does not require any blood to be drawn. Patients who are tested are given their results before leaving the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department at Eskenazi Health. Any patient with a reactive test is given a confirmatory blood test, and those who are HIV positive are linked to HIV care with the Eskenazi Health Infectious Disease Clinic. Patients are educated about the importance of knowing their HIV status, receiving an annual HIV screening, as well as information on how to stay negative.

Outside of the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department, our staff and volunteers participate in community health fairs around Indianapolis.
