Trauma

In a hospital setting, trauma refers to serious injury or condition, sometimes life-threatening and often complex. Eskenazi Health is equipped to handle the most severe emergencies, including those resulting from falls, motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, assaults and burns.

The Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center at Eskenazi Health provides the most extensive range and quality of trauma care in the entire state, serving as the first adult Level I trauma center in Indiana.

Verified trauma centers must meet essential criteria that ensure trauma care capabilities and institutional performance, as defined by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. The Committee on Trauma Verification’s Review and Consultation Program for Hospitals has certified that the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center not only has the resources necessary for trauma care but also can provide the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients, from pre-hospital admission through rehabilitation. Eskenazi Health has five state-of-the-art shock rooms, completely updated equipment and an operating room dedicated specifically to trauma 24/7.

Eskenazi Health's trauma team also strives to prevent trauma injuries through its community outreach efforts, education initiatives and violence prevention programs.
