Bridging the Gap - Careers - Eskenazi Health

Bridging the Gap (BTG), is a training course designed for bilingual individuals who desire to become interpreters in a health care environment. The course covers basic interpreter skills, code of ethics, protocols, cultural competence, overview of health care policies, basic medical terminology, communication skills for advocacy, professional development and other topics relevant to the field of interpretation services.

This 40-hour professional development course is now being offered at Eskenazi Health through The Cross Cultural Health Care Program. While the BTG course provides the training needed to apply for jobs as medical interpreters, it does not certify individuals as medical interpreters. Also, BTG participants must pass an assessment prior to beginning this course to prove that they are sufficiently fluent in a second language.

Bridging the Gap courses are offered periodically at the Eskenazi Health campus. Each course is five days and runs from 9 a.m.  – 5 p.m. each day. Upcoming course dates are:

  • Sept. 29 and 30, and Oct. 1, 7 and 8
  • Dec. 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10

BTG is free for Eskenazi Health employees and $500 for external applicants.  Aside from completing and passing the language proficiency test, participants must be able to attend all five days of the course to complete the program. Employees must have supervisor approval before registering for this course.
