Established in 1999, the Diseases Attacking the Immune System (DAISY) Foundation was started by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he passed away from complications of an auto-immune disease at the age of 33. During Barnes’ eight-week hospitalization in Seattle, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to him, but also to everyone in his family. In honor of the nurses who had made such a large impact on the Barnes family’s lives, the DAISY Award was created to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of health care patients.
Today, the DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Eskenazi Health is proud to be a DAISY Award partner, recognizing Eskenazi Health nurses and nurse leaders with the award.
The Eskenazi Health Shared Governance Recruitment and Retention Council reviews nominations submitted by patients and their loved ones, staff members and physicians. A nurse is honored with the DAISY award each month, and a nurse leader is honored each quarter. Honorees consistently demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise and compassionate care and are recognized at a public ceremony in his or her area with a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture bearing the inscription “A Healer’s Touch.”
